Lowell Handler Project Updates

The first film Lowell Handler directed, Terefu and Her Children, has just been placed for digital distribution with WGBH in Boston. After winning film festivals world-wide including Best Documentary Short at the Paris Independent Film Festival and the Grand Budapest Film Festival, it will be seen by between one and two million viewers per year for a contract period of three years.

Oliver Sacks' new posthumous book Everything in its Place is in print, with a chapter called "Travels with Lowell." Lowell explains, "It is somewhat strange, however satisfying reading about oneself from thirty years ago. There were some good bittersweet laughs. It is one of the many gifts Oliver left me."

Here are excerpts from some of the reviews:

From the Lambda Literary Review
"Lowell Handler seems to hold an important key to understanding Sacks...."

"We get the backstory on his famous friendship with photojournalist Lowell Handler and their visit to La Crete, a small, mainly Mennonite village in northern Canada where Tourette syndrome is endemic."

The New York Review of Books has just published an article Lowell wrote, with my photographs, about a night in the red light district of Amsterdam with Oliver. Here it is:

In April 2020, Lowell will appear on-camera with his photographs speaking about Oliver's life and legacy in Ric Burns new PBS doc. Ric, who is Ken Burns' brother, and his editor have selected a significant collection of his images for the film. It will air on the "American Masters Series," and overseas television. The broadcast date will be posted once determined.
