WHAT IS TOURETTE SYNDROME?

  • Tourette Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder marked by uncontrollable movements of the head and body, sounds and words, outbursts that occur repeatedly and other involuntary tics
  • More than 200,000 people in the United States have Tourette Syndrome.
  • Symptoms change periodically in number and frequency, type and severity – even disappearing for weeks or months at a time.
  • Corprolalia (uttering obscenities and slurs) affect fewer than 15% of people with TS.
  • All races and ethic groups and both boys and girls may develop Tourette.
  • TS often goes undiagnosed and there is no known cure.
  • TS is usually accompanied by co-existing conditions such as OCD, ADHD and anxiety disorder.
  • Tourette Syndrome is covered by the Americans with Disabilities Law.

WHY IS EDUCATION IN-SERVICE BENEFICIAL?

  • A child with Tourette Syndrome might exhibit what appears to be behavior problems: defiant, emitting sounds, displaying unusual physical mannerisms, unwilling to cooperate.
  • He/she may be disciplined for things he/she cannot control. He/she may be teased and sometimes imitated by other students.
  • TSA's Education presentations and materials are designed to help students, parents, families, educators, clinicians, and others understand, identify, and address symptoms of Tourette Syndrome.
  • The TSA has presented to hundreds of schools across the country, and in NYC.  Participants have included: regular and special education teachers, psychologists and social workers, school nurses, paraprofessionals, occupational therapists, school administrators and guidance counselors
