TOURETTE SYNDROME IN THE CLASSROOM AND SCHOOL

On Monday November 7th the United Federation of Teachers will host two educational programs about Tourette Syndrome. The first program will be for NYC educators only while the second is specifically for parents. Both are free and will feature Kathy Giordano, BA, Education Specialist, national Tourette Syndrome Association. Kathy is a national leader in the TSA effort to promote knowledge of how TS and its co-occurring conditions impact learning and functioning in the classroom

Educator Event Description (4:15-6:15pm)
This free educational in-service presentation, for NYC educators and school professionals, will help foster an understanding of how Tourette Syndrome and co-occurring conditions like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Learning Disabilities impact functioning in and out of the classroom. The program will cover recognition and management of symptoms of TS and accommodations and specific classroom strategies in order to create the best possible educational environment for students with TS, their classmates and teachers. Continuing education credits are available.

Parent Event Description (7:00-9:00pm)
This free educational presentation, for NYC parents and educators will help foster an understanding of how Tourette Syndrome and co-occurring conditions like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Learning Disabilities impact functioning in and out of the classroom. Through the use of an old suitcase and props, this workshop discusses in a humorous, yet impactful, manner how our ‘baggage’ can help or hinder effective working relationships between parents and professionals in the context of TS and its associated conditions. Participants will learn strategies to use to create the best school outcomes for children with TS and for their families and teachers.
